Generative AI Policy

UNZA JABS AI Use Policy

1. Purpose

This policy provides guidance on the appropriate use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, including large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, image generators, and other AI-assisted tools, in the preparation and submission of manuscripts to UNZA JABS.

2. Disclosure of AI Use

Authors must disclose any use of generative AI technologies in the preparation of their manuscript. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Writing assistance
  • Data analysis
  • Image or figure generation
  • Coding or modeling support

Disclosures should be included:

  • In the cover letter, and
  • Within the manuscript (Acknowledgments for writing assistance; Methods for technical use like data analysis or figure generation)
"This manuscript benefited from language refinement using ChatGPT (OpenAI, 2025). All outputs were reviewed and revised by the authors to ensure accuracy."

3. Authorship and Accountability

AI tools, including chatbots, must not be credited as authors.
Authorship in UNZA JABS requires:

  • Substantial intellectual contribution
  • Responsibility for the integrity and accuracy of the work
  • Ability to respond to peer review and make revisions

Since AI tools cannot take responsibility, they do not meet these criteria. Only humans can be listed as authors.

4. Human Oversight and Accuracy

Authors are fully responsible for verifying all content, including that generated or assisted by AI. They must:

  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and originality
  • Critically assess AI-generated outputs
  • Avoid inclusion of hallucinated or fabricated facts or references

5. Plagiarism and Proper Attribution

All material, including AI-generated text and images, must adhere to UNZA JABS' plagiarism policies. Authors must ensure:

  • No unacknowledged or misattributed content is included
  • All quoted or paraphrased material is cited appropriately

6. Ethical Considerations

Use of AI must comply with research ethics and data privacy standards. Authors should avoid using AI tools in ways that:

  • Misrepresent data
  • Fabricate findings
  • Violate confidentiality or participant rights

7. Editorial Review

UNZA JABS reserves the right to:

  • Request details or clarification about AI use
  • Reject submissions that violate this policy
  • Retract published articles if undisclosed or unethical AI use is discovered
